Eugenia brasiliensis
Eugenia brasiliensis Family: myrtaceaeOrigin: Species native of Brazil, and more precisely of Parana and Santa Catarina.Ethymology: The species name "brasiliensis" indicates its original range.Use (s): The cherries of Brazil are not sold on the markets of the island of Reunion, because of their fragility. They are still commonly found in Creole gardens. The cherry of Brazil is appreciated as such for its delicacy but can also be processed into jams or jellies. Macerated in rum, the cherries give a very good punch. The tails of the cherry are diuretic depuratives and febrifuges.Biology: It is a tree that grows ideally on sandy and acid soil. However, it adapts to a wide variety of substrates as long as they are well drained. It is a cherry tree of hot and humid climates grown up to 700 m altitude. Previously grown on the island, it has become naturalized in the forests of the East Coast.Propagation is by seed, by cuttings or grafting for the best subjects. Its growth is slow, and it does not start producing after 4 to 5 years. The formation of the cherry that takes place during the rainy season requires a regular supply of water.Description: The Brazilian cherry tree is a tropical fruit bush that can reach 15 meters in height. It has a squamous trunk and tufted branches, tinny and brittle. Its greyish bark cracks and peels with age. Its foliage is dense, dark green shining on the upper face, lighter on the underside. The juvenile leaves are reddish. The small white flowers appear in the axils of the leaves. The white petals reveal many long stamens. The cherry is a dark red berry that turns black when ripe. It is flattened at the poles and retains on the opposite side to the peduncle the rest of the sepals. The juicy, sweet and fragrant pulp is of soft consistency. It is orange to red and contains one or more seeds.
